Phytoestrogens Could Help Fight Breast Cancer

One year ago, a team of researchers showed that a diet rich in plant compounds lowers the risk of breast cancer in women after menopause. These compounds are called phytoestrogens and they attach to the receptors for the female sexual hormone estrogen. The studies shows the therapeutic effects of these compounds. Now, Heidelberg researchers want to know if phytoestrogens have any influence on the course of breast cancer development.

The researchers found that the women with the highest enterolactone levels had a 40 percent lower risk of death, when compared to patients with the lowest enterolactone levels. Additionally, when scientists factored in the prevalence of metastasis and secondary tumors, the found a similar conclusion: “Women with the highest enterolactone levels also had a lower risk for such an unfavorable disease progression.” Read more…
